I’m not quite sure how or where to start! I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, anxiety, OCD, and PTSD. I have been experiencing these conditions and symptoms of them ever since I can remember, I had a traumatic childhood that caused a lot of the issues. I was sexually abused by multiple family members, and experienced the loss of one of my brothers through suicide when I was 16. I recently received psychiatric help through inpatient care and have been going to therapy for the past two years. I’ve tried different meds, no meds, holistic options, anything you can think of to manage them. This is overall pretty general, let me know what you’d like more details on! I am very open about my struggles and do not mind sharing! Mental health advocacy is very important to me and always has been, I’m actually a Psychology and Social Work major at the UofA, hoping to reach a Master’s and work as a clinical therapist.
1. What does mental health mean to you?
Mental health is everything, it is more than just a positive mindset. Having poor mental health is so damaging to our quality of life, we are not able to enjoy things, or process emotions, we are stuck going through the motions instead of living through the moments. Our minds are so powerful, if we talk ourselves into a dangerous headspace and don’t have the resources to dig ourselves out, we can become stuck there and it will become a cycle of behaviors to try to cope. There’s so much I could say about the importance of having a sound mind and how it will directly affect every aspect of life.
